Beach walk brings Camborne Youth a step closer to Belgian tour

Camborne Youth Band's sponsored 'Brass on the Beach' walk took place on Sunday 6th July, starting at Godrevy Beach. The event was another helpful fundraiser for the band's tour to Belgium next month.

Band members, together with friends and relatives, met at Godrevy Beach and played a selection of wartime marches outside the beach café, conducted by their Musical Director, Alan Pope. The instruments were then couriered on separately while the band walked along the beach, through Gwithian, towards Hayle. The band took several opportunities to performing along the way, playing again at the Sunset Surf Café, Hayle Surf Life Saving Club and finally Philps Pasty Shop in Hayle.

Society Trustee, Michelle Smith, commented: "The weather was beautiful and everyone enjoyed the day, although the walk was rather longer than some of us anticipated! The tour to Belgium will visit a number of First World War battlefields, cemeteries and memorials. The youth band will play in a number of the commemorative ceremonies taking place to mark the centenary and it has just been confirmed that they will perform at the Menin Gate, which is obviously a great honour."

Michelle continued: "A lot of the musicians are hoping to take part and because the majority are children we are trying to raise funds independently rather than asking them to pay for their own place. The trip will cost several thousand pounds and we don’t have very long in which to raise the money. We'd like to thank everyone who took part in the walk for their efforts and also everyone who sponsored us for their generous support."
